Acute Phase Dosing
In the acute phase of RDS, oxygen dosing has been studied examining higher target ranges vs lower target ranges, but not within randomized, controlled designs.3 and 34 In a survey of NICUs in the United States examining Spo2 targets and ROP, Anderson et al35 found less risk of ablative surgery when Spo2 targets were less than 98% in the first 2 weeks of life. They also found significantly decreased risk of stage 3 or higher ROP when the target was 92 or less. In an observation study, Tin et al36 showed significant findings that, in nurseries with higher target ranges of Spo2 (88%-98%) in the first 8 weeks of life, cryotherapy was required four times as often as in nurseries where the target range was 80% to 91%.
