OK, so...top 5 ways to be funny in American English

오케이, 자… 미국식 영어로 웃기는 5가지 비결.

Let's start with number 5.

다섯 번째 비결부터 시작할게

Number 5 is something called puns.

다섯 번째 비결은 ‘말장난’이야.

Pun: 말장난, 언어유희

I hate puns...everyone hates puns

나는 말장난이 싫어. 다들 싫어해

but then you laugh at them and you don't know why you're laughing.

근데 왠지 웃게 되고, 왜 웃는 지도 모르지

So, a pun is something I like to call a dad joke :)

그래서 나는 ‘말장난’을 ‘아빠 개그’라고 부르고 싶어

Dad joke: 아재개그를 굳이 번역하면 이거

This is the kind of joke your dad tells, at least my dad tells...most dads tell.

이건 아빠들이 하는 농담인데, 적어도 울 아빠가 하는… 대부분의 아빠가 하는.

(세상에… 아재 개그를 하다니)

My dad would get up early every morning and cook us breakfast,

우리 아빠는 매일 아침 일찍 일어나서 아침을 해주시는데

which was awesome and very nice of him.

정말 멋진 일이고 정말 자상한 아빠지.

He would turn making breakfast into comedy hour

아빠는 아침 준비를 개그 시간으로 바꿔 버리곤 하셨어

Trun A into B: A를 B로 만들다, 바꾸다

where he would make jokes about eggs :)

달걀을 갖고 농담을 하셨거든

Eggs aren't funny...but dads can make them "funny".

달걀은 웃긴 게 아니지만, 아빠는 달걀을 ‘웃기게’ 만드셨어

He would say things like…

아빠가 뭐라셨냐면

this breakfast is going to be EGGcellent....EGGciting

이 아침식사는 “에그셀런트”하게 될 거야. “에그싸이팅”하게 될 거야

(달갈(egg)과 멋진(excellent), 신나는(exciting)을 갖고 한 말장난)

I cracked the code on how to make the best breakfast.

최고의 아침식사를 만들기 위한 암호를 풀었어

Crack: 깨다, (암호 등을) 풀다

(암호를 풀다(crack the code) 달걀을 깨다(crack the egg) 모두 crack이 들어가는 것을 이용한 말장난)

Do you get it?

알 것 같아?

(힘들다…)

So, when you open eggs...we say you're cracking them.

그니까, 네가 달걀을 깰 때… 달걀을 crack한다고 하잖아.

So a pun is when you use a word in a different way

즉 말장난은 단어를 다른 방식으로 사용하는 거야.

or you use it as part of a different word.

또는 단어를 다른 단어의 일부로 쓰거나.

So, like EGGciting...sounds a lot like exciting. EGGceptional, EGGcellent…

에그싸이팅은 exciting(신나는)으로 들리지. 에그셉셔널(exceptional, 특출난), 에그셀런트…

all these EX words you turn it into egg and you have a pun.

EX를 egg로 바꿔서 말장난을 하는 거야.

(아재 개그를 설명해 주고 있어…)

EGGciting breakfast!

에그싸이팅한 아침식사!

(아이고 부장님 깔깔깔)

And they do this, like, pause...be like, ahhh, ahhh, ahhhh.

그러면 다들 이렇게 얼어버리고…

Oh my gosh,

오 이런…

but then you kind of laugh because it's kind of funny.

하지만 그러곤 웃어 버리지 왜냐면 웃기긴 하니까.

(안 웃겨 안 웃기다고)

The most famous dad on TV right now that is always delivering amazing puns is

항상 멋진 말장난을 해내는 TV에 나오는 가장 유명한 아빠는

Phil Dunphy…

One of his favorites is to tell his kids he's going to give them a little PHILosophy.

그가 가장 좋아하는 건 애들한테 그의 철학*을 알려주겠다고 말하는 거야

(*철학(philosophy)의 앞부분 phil이 자기 이름 Phil과 철자가 같음)

Number 4 is called taboo humor. Taboo, what is taboo?

네 번째는 ‘금기’ 유머야. 금기, 금기가 뭘까?

Taboo: 금기, 터부. 금지

Taboo is a subject you shouldn't talk about.

금기는 ‘말해선 안 되는 주제’야.

Taboo humor is when you laugh at things that you shouldn't even be talking about,

금기 유머는 네가 심지어 말도 해선 안 되는 것들에 대해 웃는 거야

let alone, be laughing at.

웃는 건 당연히 안 되고.

Let alone: ~는 말할 것도 없고, ~은 물론

Taboo humor is when you laugh but you feel guilty inside

금기 유머는 네가 웃으면서도 속으로는 찔려하는 거지.

like, that shouldn't be funny but it's funny.

그니까, 웃기면 안되는데 웃긴 거지.

You know? :)

알겠어? :)

You can laugh about things like: death, sex, religion, race, politics

죽음이나 성, 종교, 인종, 종교에 대해서 웃는 거지.

all the things you're not suppose to be talking about and joking about

말해서도 안 되고 농담을 해서도 안 되는 것들 말이야.

taboo humor makes fun of these things.

금기 유머는 이런 것들을 가지고 농담을 하는 거야.

For some of you taboo humor might be not funny...just might offend you

어떤 사람들한테는 금기 유머가 웃기지도 않고, 그냥 불쾌할 수도 있어.

Offend: 심기를 건드리다, 도발하다

so, if you're easily offended...stay away from taboo humor.

그러니까, 쉽게 불쾌해하는 사람이라면 금기 유머는 피하도록 해.

Stay away from something: ~를 멀리하다, 피하다

They literally only use taboo humor, you've been warned.

완전 금기 유머로만 이루어져 있는데, 난 분명 경고 했어.

And the other one is Family Guy.

또 하나는 <Family Guy>야.

Family Guy uses a lot of different kinds of humor, it's not only taboo

<Family Guy>는 다양한 종류의 유머를 사용하는데, 금기 유머만은 아니지만

but they do have quite a bit of taboo humor thrown in as well.

금기 유머를 제법 끼워 넣기는 했어

Throw in: 끼워 넣다, 곁들이다

That was number 4.

이게 네 번째였고.

Number 3. Dry humor.

세 번째는 시크한 유머.

Dry humor: 정색하고 하는 유머.

This is one of my favorites humors.

이건 내가 좋아하는 유머인데

Dry humor is when people say something,

시크한 유머는 사람들이 말을 하는데

but are purposely being completely expressionless

일부러 무표정으로 말하는 거야.

Expressionless: 무표정의

like, well I think you should jump off a cliff.

예를 들어서, “너 절벽에서 뛰어내려야겠어.”

(무표정)

(개그 실패)

Something just..when you say something and you have no expression

네가 말을 하는데, 표정이 없는 그런 거지.

and the fact that the person has no expression is making you laugh.

그리고 그 사람이 표정이 없다는 게 웃긴 거야.

So, it's not like this person has to be mad or depressed or anything like that

그니까 그 사람이 화나 나거나 우울해하거나 그럴 필요는 없고

it's just that they are purposely expressionless to make something funny.

그냥 웃기게 하려고 일부러 아무 표정도 짓지 않는 거지.

There's one show that has two exceptional examples of dry humor...and

시크한 유머의 두 가지 예를 아주 탁월하게 보여주는 프로가 있는데

that is Parks and Recreation.

바로 <Parks and Recreation>야.

I love this show...it's such a good show. Go watch it.

내가 좋아하는 쇼야. 정말 좋은 쇼야. 한 번 봐봐.

There are two characters in this show:

그 쇼에는 두 명의 캐릭터가 있는데

Ron Swanson is the most classic dry humor character that

론 스완슨은 가장 고전적인 ‘시크한 유머’ 캐릭터인데

Classic: 고전적인, 전형적인

there may have ever been in America

미국에 한 번은 있었을 법한 캐릭터지

and then there's also a character called April Ludgate

그리고 에이프릴 루드게이트라는 캐릭터가 있는데

who's equally great at dry humor.

마찬가지로 시크한 유머를 잘하는 사람이지.

These two characters consistently deliver dry humor throughout the show

이 두 캐릭터들이 쇼 내내 계속해서 시크한 유머를 구사하는데

Number 2 is sarcasm.

두 번째는 비아냥이야.

Sarcasm: 비아냥, 빈정거림

America loves sarcasm.

미국은 비아냥을 좋아하지.

I'm sarcastic with you all the time.

난 항상 너희들한테 비아냥 거리지.

Sarcasm is when you say one thing but you mean something different.

비아냥은 네가 진짜로 뜻하는 바와 다르게 말하는 거야.

Or sometimes you say one thing and you mean the exact opposite.

때로는 네가 뜻하는 바와 완전히 반대로 말하기도 하지.

Like, your friend walks in and they look awful,

예를 들어, 친구가 들어오는데 몰골이 추하다

Walk in: 걸어 들어오다

and you say, ohhh....don't you look nice

그럼 이렇게 말하는 거지 “와 정말 멋지다”

but what you mean is you look like shit,

하지만 네 진짜 뜻은 너 정말 후지다는 거지.

(개그가 아니라 그냥 까는 거 아닌가…?)

which we talked about in the Shit Video.

Shit Video에서 이 얘기도 했었지.

Sarcasm..there are two very classic characters,

비아냥에는 두 개의 매우 전형적인 캐릭터가 있는데

one of them is the most classic sarcastic character in the history of American television

하나는 미국 TV 역사상 가장 전형적인 비아냥 캐릭터인데

and that is Chandler from FRIENDS.

바로 <프렌즈>의 챈들러야.

If you've ever watched FRIENDS and you've ever seen how Chandler talk,

<프렌즈>를 본 적이 있고 챈들러가 어떻게 말하는지 본 적이 있다면

you know about sarcasm.

비아냥이 뭔지 알 거야.

A second really good, more modern example is Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.

두 번째는 아주 좋은, 더 현대적인 예인데 <빅뱅이론>의 쉘든이야.

He's sarcastic quite often as well...not as much as Chandler,

쉘든도 꽤 자주 비아냥거리는데, 챈들러만큼은 아니지만

but still a lot of sarcasm.

굉장히 많이 비아냥대지.

The number 1 way to be funny in American English right now is being awkward.

지금 당장 미국식 영어로 웃기는 첫 번째 방법은 어색해지는 거야.

Awkward: 어색한, 서투른

Usually when I talk about awkward with even advanced students,

‘어색함’에 대해 얘기하면 고급 수준 학생들조차

they are a little confused about what awkward means.

‘어색함’이 뭔지 다소 혼란스러워하더라고.

So, what awkward is...is when you get that feeling in your stomach,

‘어색함’이란 것은 어딘가 속이 불편한 그런 느낌

like, something's very uncomfortable.

그니까 뭔가 매우 불편한 거.

Like, someone's acting really strange,

예를 들어서 굉장히 이상하게 행동하는 건데

sitting around making strange faces like....

앉아서는 이상한 표정을 짓는 거야. 이렇게.

Make faces: (특히 이상하거나 웃긴) 표정을 짓다

(....???뭐지)

(???)

(내가 다 불편;;)

They're acting awkward,

어색하게 구는 거야

you don't know how to deal with the situation.

상황에 어떻게 대처해야 할지를 모르는 거지

It's very uncomfortable.

매우 불편해.

But, a lot of times watching other people uncomfortable, is really funny.

하지만 대부분의 경우 다른 사람이 불편해하는 걸 보는 건 아주 재밌어.

(보는 것도 불편하던데...)

Two of the best examples of awkwardness on TV are: The (American) Office...

TV 프로 중 가장 좋은 ‘어색함’ 사례 두 가지가 있는데 하나는 미국판 <오피스>야.

pretty much the whole show is awkward.

쇼 전체가 어색하지.

And then also, New Girl.

그리고 또 <뉴 걸>.

The main character Jesse in New Girl, played by Zooey Deschanel is just constantly awkward.

주인공인 <뉴 걸>의 제스는 주이 디샤넬이 연기했는데, 쇼 내내 어색해.

And it's one of the things that makes her so so funny.

이게 바로 그녀가 웃긴 이유야.

I recommend that you watch those two shows
