영국 왕실의 유래는?

Of the nearly 30 monarchies in the world today,

오늘날 세계의 30개에 육박하는 군주제 가운데

far and away the most famous is that of the United Kingdom.

단연코 가장 유명한 것은 영국의 왕실입니다.

Far and away: 최상급을 강조하는 표현. 단연코, 훨씬. E.g. far and away the best 단연코 최고

From the death of Princess Diana, to the Royal Wedding, to the queen’s many hats,

다이애나 왕세자비의 죽음에서부터 왕실 결혼식, 여왕의 수많은 모자들까지

the international media seems to be obsessed with Britain’s royal family.

세계의 미디어는 영국 왕실에 굉장히 집착하는 듯이 보입니다.

But there is a republican movement in the United Kingdom

하지만 영국에서는 공화국 운동이 벌어지고 있는데요

that actually wants to see an end to this centuries-old institution,

이 수 백 년이나 된 체제의 끝을 보고 싶다는 겁니다.

Centuries-old: 수 백 년이나 된, 수 백 살의

as it reportedly costs taxpayers millions of dollars every year.

보고에 따르면 납세자들에게 매년 수백만 달러의 부담을 지운다는 거죠.

So, where did Britain’s royal family come from,

그렇다면, 영국의 왕실은 어디서 왔으며

and what role do they play in society today?

오늘날 사회에서 어떤 역할을 하고 있는 걸까요?

Around the year 827,

827년 경,

King Egbert of the region “Wessex” conquered kingdoms in every direction,

웨섹스 지방의 에그버트 왕은 사방의 왕국들을 점령하고 다녔는데요

In every direction: 사방 팔방에, 모든 곳의

eventually becoming the first King of England.

결국엔 잉글랜드의 첫 번째 왕이 되었죠

Over the course of roughly 700 years,

대략 700년의 세월에 걸쳐

England saw dozens of kings from multiple family lineages.

잉글랜드에는 여러 혈통을 가진 수십 명의 왕들이 재위했습니다.

Lineage: 혈통, 핏줄

But in the late 1600’s, the Royal line of succession came to a standstill,

그러나 1600년대 말에 왕위 계승이 멈춰버리는 일이 생겼는데요

Standstill: 정지, 정체

as the King and his wife had only one legitimate heir who ultimately bore no children.

왕과 그 아내에게 딱 한 명 있었던 적법한 왕위계승자가 결국 자식을 낳지 않았거든요.

Heir: 후계자, 상속자

Foreseeing an end to the family line,

혈통이 끝나게 될 것을 예상하여

Parliament passed the Act of Settlement in 1701,

의회는 1701년 왕위상속법을 통과시켰습니다.

The Act of Settlement: 1701년 영국에서 통과된 왕위상속법

which stated that the royal lineage should restart with one of the King’s distant relatives,

이 법에 따르면 왕가의 혈통은 왕의 먼 친척에서부터 다시 시작할 수 있었는데요

Sophia of Hanover.

바로 하노버 가의 소피아 입니다.

Although Sophia ultimately died before inheriting the throne,

소피아는 결국 왕위를 계승하기 전에 사망했지만,

Inherit something: ~을 상속 받다, 물려받다

her heirs took over the line of succession,

그녀의 후계자가 왕위를 계승했습니다.

Succession: 계승, 승계

beginning with her son, King George the First in 1714.

1714년 그녀의 아들인 조지 1세 왕에서부터 시작되었던 거죠.

In the more than 300 years since,

그로부터 300년이 넘는 세월 동안

all British monarchs have descended from this line.

모든 영국의 왕실은 이 혈통에서 나왔습니다.

The Act of Settlement not only limited the throne to the ‘legitimate heirs of Sophia of Hanover’,

왕위계승법은 왕위를 ‘하노버 가 소피아의 적법한 후계자’에 한정시켰을 뿐만 아니라

Limit A to B: A를 B로 제한하다

Throne: 왕좌, 왕위

but also excluded all Roman Catholics and those who marry Roman Catholics.

모든 로마 가톨릭신자와, 로마 가톨릭 신자와 결혼한 이들을 배제시켰습니다.

The British monarchy has been at odds with the Catholic Church

영국 왕실은 줄곧 가톨릭 교회와 불화가 있어왔는데요

Be at odds with something: ~와 불화가 있다, 사이가 나쁘다

since King Henry VIII broke off from Catholicism in the 16th Century.

16세기에 헨리 8세가 가톨릭교와 관계를 끊고 난 이후였죠.

Break off from: ~와 관계를 끊다

Henry the 8th wanted to divorce his wife but couldn’t under the principles of Catholicism,

헨리 8세는 아내와 이혼을 하고 싶었지만 가톨릭 교리 하에서는 불가능했고,

so he formed his own “Church of England”.

그래서 그만의 ‘영국 정교회’를 만들었습니다.

Traditional laws of succession also stated

또한 전통적인 왕위계승법에 따르면

that royal sons inherit the throne before daughters,

왕자는 공주보다 우선적으로 왕위를 계승하며,

and older children are prioritized over younger.

나이가 많은 쪽이 어린 쪽보다 우선됩니다.

Prioritize something: ~를 우선시하다

However in 2011, Prime Minister David Cameron announced

그러나 2011년 데이비드 카레론 총리는

that all future monarchs will be able to marry Catholics,

앞으로 모든 군주는 가톨릭교 신자와 결혼할 수 있으며

Monarch: 군주, 왕

and that future rulers would no longer by limited by the gender-preference rule.

어떤 왕도 특정 성별에 대한 선호로 결정되지 않는다고 선포했습니다.

Gender-preference: 남/녀 중 어느 한 성별만을 특별히 선호하는 것

The role of the UK’s monarch is to act as head of state,

영국 왕실의 역할은 국가의 지도자로서 행동하는 것이며,

and is limited to ceremonial, non-partisan duties.

의례적이며 비당파적인 의무에 한정되어 있습니다.

Non-partisan: 비당파적인, 특정 정당에 치우치지 않는

This includes bestowing honors, hosting dinners for foreign leaders, traveling abroad

이는 명예를 수여하는 것, 외국 지도자들을 만찬에 초대하는 것, 해외 순방

Bestow: 수여하다, 내리다

and appointing the Prime Minister, as recommended by the House of Commons.

그리고 하원이 추천하는 바대로 총리를 임명하는 것을 포함합니다.

When a monarch dies, their heir automatically takes power,

왕이 사망하면 그 후계자가 저절로 권한을 계승합니다.

hence the phrase, “the king is dead, long live the king!”

그래서 이런 구절이 있죠. “왕이 죽었다, 왕 만세!”

Queen Elizabeth II took over in 1952 after her father died.

1952년 아버지가 사망한 후, 엘리자베스 2세 여왕은 그 뒤를 이었습니다.

Take over: 뒤를 잇다, 계승하다, 인수하다

When she passes, her eldest son, Prince Charles is next in line for the throne.

그녀가 사망하면, 그녀의 장자인 찰스 왕자가 왕위를 계승할 차례입니다.

After Charles is Prince William, then Prince George, and then so on.

찰스 왕자 다음에는 윌리엄 왕자, 그 다음 조지 왕자, 그런 식으로 이어집니다.

In fact there are more than 5,000 descendants of Sophia of Hanover

사실 하노버 가 소피아의 후손은 현재 5000명 이상 있는데

who are eligible to succeed the throne, according to the language of the Act of Settlement.

왕위계승법에 따르면 이들 모두 왕위를 계승할 자격이 있습니다.

Monarchs cannot abdicate the throne unless they have approval from parliament.

왕은 의회의 동의가 없는 이상 왕위에서 물러날 수 없습니다.

Abdication is extremely rare,

although it did happen in 1936,

when King Edward VIII relinquished the crown to marry an American commoner,

에드워드 8세 왕이 미국의 평민과 결혼하기 위해 왕위를 포기했던 건데요

Relinquish: 양도하다, 포기하다

Crown: 왕관. 비유적 표현으로 ‘왕위’를 뜻하기도.

Commoner: 평민

who was, to the dislike of the Protestant church, in the midst of her second divorce.

그녀는 개신교 교회가 싫어할 만한, 두 번의 이혼을 겪은 사람이었습니다.

Queen Elizabeth II is the UK’s longest reigning monarch,

엘리자베스 2세 여왕은 영국에서 가장 오래 재위한 군주인데요

Reign: 통치하다, 집권하다, 재임하다

and still plays an active ceremonial and political role in London.

여전히 런던에서 의례적, 정치적 역할을 활발히 하고 있습니다.

It doesn’t appear that Brits would have it any other way,

영국인들은 현재의 상태가 유지되길 바라는 것 같은데요

Brit: 영국인 (Britain의 줄임말)

as 2016 polls suggested that the Queen has a 75 percent approval rating.

2016년 여론조사에 따르면 여왕의 지지율이 75퍼센트에 달하기 때문입니다.

Approval rating: 지지율, 찬성율

Despite rising pressure from anti-monarchists,

군주제를 반대하는 이들의 압박이 거세지고 있긴 하지만

it’s unlikely this historical institution will dissolve anytime soon.

이 역사적인 체제가 금방 사라질 것 같진 않습니다.

One of the most successful absolute monarchies

is in Vatican City, which is governed by the pope.

교황이 지배하는 바티칸 시국에 있습니다.

Pope: 교황

The rest are primarily in the Middle East and Africa;

그 외는 주로 중동과 아프리카게 있는네요,

these nations tend to be plagued by human rights abuses

이들 국가들은 인권침해 문제로 고통 받는 경향이 있는데

because there aren't sufficient checks on the monarch's supreme power.

군주의 절대 권력에 대한 충분한 견제가 이루어지지 않기 때문이죠.
