알고보면 참 복잡한 영어의 족보

When we talk about English, we often think of it as a single language

우리가 영어에 대해 말할 때, 흔히들 이것을 단일한 언어로 생각하죠.

but what do the dialects spoken in dozens of countries around the world

하지만 세계 여러 나라들에서 사용되는 방언들은

have in common with each other, or with the writings of Chaucer?

그들끼리, 또는 Chaucer의 글과 어떤 공통점이 있을까요?

And how are any of them related to the strange words in Beowulf?

또 그들은 Beowulf의 이상한 단어들과 어떤 관련이 있을까요?

Beowulf: 고대 영어로 된 대서사시.

The answer is that like most languages,

정답은 대부분의 언어들처럼,

English has evolved through generations of speakers,

영어는 수 세대의 화자들을 거쳐 진화되어 왔고

undergoing major changes over time.

시간에 따라 주된 변화를 겪어왔다는 것입니다.

Undergo something: ~을 겪다, 견뎌내다

By undoing these changes,

이러한 변화들을 걷어냄으로써

Undo: 취소하다, 원래대로 되돌리다

we can trace the language from the present day back to its ancient roots.

우리는 이 언어를 현재로부터 고대의 기원으로 추적해 갈 수 있습니다.

Trace something back to something: ~의 기원을 ~까지 거슬러 추적하다

While modern English shares many similar words

현대 영어는 여러 비슷한 단어를 공유하고 있는데요

with Latin-derived romance languages, like French and Spanish,

프랑스어나 스페인어 같은, 라틴어에서 파생된 로망스어들과 말이죠

Derived: 파생된, 유래된

most of those words were not originally part of it.

그러나 이들 대부분은 원래 영어에 있지 않았습니다.

Instead, they started coming into the language

사실 그들이 영어에 도입되기 시작했던 건

with the Norman invasion of England in 1066.

1066년 노르만족이 잉글랜드를 침략했을 때입니다.

When the French-speaking Normans conquered England

프랑스어를 사용하던 노르만족들이 잉글랜드를 정복했을 때

and became its ruling class,

그리고 그들이 지배계급이 되었을 때

they brought their speech with them,

그들은 그들의 언어도 가져왔고

adding a massive amount of French and Latin vocabulary

거대한 프랑스어와 라틴어 어휘군을 추가했습니다.

to the English language previously spoken there.

이전에 그곳에서 사용되었던 영어에 말입니다.

Today, we call that language Old English.

오늘날 우리는 그 언어를 고대 영어라고 하죠.

This is the language of Beowulf.

이것이 Beowulf에서 쓰인 언어입니다.

It probably doesn't look very familiar,

친숙해 보이진 않겠지만

but it might be more recognizable if you know some German.

독일어를 좀 안다면 좀더 알아보기 쉬울 겁니다.

Recognizable: 알아보기 쉬운, 인식 가능한

That's because Old English belongs to the Germanic language family,

왜냐면 고대 영어는 게르만어군에 속하기 때문이죠.

Belong to something: ~에 속하다

first brought to the British Isles in the 5th and 6th centuries

게르만어족은 5세기와 6세기에 영국 제도에 처음 도입되었는데요

by the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.

앵글로족, 색슨족, 주트족에 의해서였습니다.

The Germanic dialects they spoke would become known as Anglo-Saxon.

그들이 사용했던 게르만 방언은 앵글로-색슨으로 알려지게 되어습니다.

Viking invaders in the 8th to 11th centuries

8세기에서 11세기 바이킹 침략자들이

added more borrowings from Old Norse into the mix.

그 혼합물에 고대 노르웨이어 차용어들을 좀더 보탰죠.

It may be hard to see the roots of modern English

현대 영어의 기원을 알아보기는 힘들 것입니다

underneath all the words borrowed from French, Latin, Old Norse and other languages.

프랑스어, 라틴어, 고대 노르웨이어 등으로부터 빌려온 단어들이 이렇게 많으니까요

But comparative linguistics can help us by focusing on grammatical structure,

하지만 비교 언어학이 도움이 될 수 있는데, 문법 구조에 집중하고 또

patterns of sound changes, and certain core vocabulary.

음 변화의 양상, 특정한 핵심 어휘에 집중함으로써 말입니다.

For example, after the 6th century,

예를 들어 6세기 이후에

German words starting with "p," systematically shifted to a "pf" sound

p로 시작하는 독일어 단어가 조직적으로 pf 음으로 변했는데

Shift to something: ~로 변하다, 전환하다

while their Old English counterparts kept the "p" unchanged.

고대 영어의 대응되는 부분은 p를 유지했죠.

Counterpart: 대응되는 부분. 쌍을 이루는 것 중의 한 쪽.

In another split, words that have "sk" sounds in Swedish

다른 한편, 스웨덴어에서 sk음을 갖고 있는 단어는

developed an "sh" sound in English.

영어에서는 sh 음으로 발달했습니다.

There are still some English words with "sk," like "skirt," and "skull,"

"skirt"와 "skull" 처럼 아직도 sk 음을 지닌 영단어가 몇몇 있긴 한데,

but they're direct borrowings from Old Norse that came after the "sk" to "sh" shift.

이들은 sk가 sh로 변한 이후에 들어온 고대 노르웨이어 직접 차용어입니다.

These examples show us

이런 사례들이 보여주는 것은

that just as the various Romance languages descended from Latin,

라틴어로부터 다양한 로망스어들이 유래했듯이

Descend from something: ~에서 유래하다, 내려오다

English, Swedish, German, and many other languages

영어, 스웨덴어, 독일어, 그리고 다른 여러 언어들이

descended from their own common ancestor known as Proto-Germanic

게르만 조어라는 그들 공통의 조상으로부터 유래했다는 것입니다.

spoken around 500 B.C.E.

(이 게르만 조어는) 기원전 500년 경에 사용되었죠.

Because this historical language was never written down,

이 역사적인 언어는 기록된 바가 없기 때문에

we can only reconstruct it by comparing its descendants,

which is possible thanks to the consistency of the changes.

변화의 일관성 덕에 가능한 일이죠.

We can even use the same process to go back one step further,

우리는 한 발짝 더 거슬러 올라가기 위해 같은 방식을 적용할 수 있는데

One step further: 한 발 더.  take/go one step further은 ‘한 발 더 나아가다’. 한국어 ‘한 발 더 나아가다’와 거의 똑같이 쓰임. (발전이 있거나, 내용을 심화시킬 때)

and trace the origins of Proto-Germanic,

게르만 조어의 기원을 추적해

to a language called Proto-Indo-European

인도유럽 조어라는 언어에까지 닿을 수 있습니다.

spoken about 6000 years ago on the Pontic steppe in modern day Ukraine and Russia.

6000년 전 쯤에 오늘날 우크라이나와 러시아인 폰틱 스텝에서 사용된 언어죠.

This is the reconstructed ancestor of the Indo-European family

이것이 인도유럽어 계열 언어들의 재구성된 조상입니다.

that includes nearly all languages historically spoken in Europe,

역사적으로 유럽에서 사용된 거의 모든 언어를 포함하고있죠.

Nearly: 거의, 대체로

*거리상 가까운 것은 near라고 하며, ‘가까이’ 가까운’ 모두 near라고 씀. 여기 -ly를 붙여 ‘가까이’를 nearly라고 해서는 안 됨.

as well as large parts of Southern and Western Asia.

남아시아와 서아시아의 큰 부분 뿐만이 아니라요.

And though it requires a bit more work,

좀 더 손이 들긴 하지만,

we can find the same systematic similarities, or correspondences,

체계적인 유사성이나, 대응하는 부분들도 찾아낼 수 있습니다.

between related words in different Indo-European branches.

서로 다른 인도유럽어파 언어들의 연관된 단어들 사이에서요.

Branch: 원래 ‘나뭇가지’라는 뜻인데, 뜻이 확장되어 ‘(회사 등의) 지사, 지점’, 동일한 조상에서 파생된 것들을 뜻함.

Comparing English with Latin, we see that English has "t" where Latin has "d",

영어와 라틴어를 비교해 보면, 라틴어엔 d가 있는 자리에 영어는 t가 있고,

and "f" where latin has "p" at the start of words.

단어의 시작 부분에 라틴어엔 p가 있는 자리에 영어는 f가 있음을 알 수 있습니다.

Some of English's more distant relatives include Hindi, Persian

영어의 좀더 먼 친척으로는 힌디어와 페르시아어

Distant relative: 먼 친척. Distant는 ‘먼’, relative는 ‘친척’

and the Celtic languages it displaced in what is now Britain.

그리고 현재의 영국에서 영어에 의해 밀려난 켈트족 언어들이 있습니다.

A displace B: A가 B의 자리를 대신하다. 원래 있던 것을 밀어내고 그 자리를 차지한다는 뜻.

Proto-Indo-European itself descended from an even more ancient language,

인도유럽 조어 자체는 훨씬 더 오랜 언어에서 유래했는데요,

but unfortunately,

this is as far back as historical and archeological evidence will allow us to go.

역사적, 고고학적 증거가 허용하는 것보다 더 전의 일입니다.

Many mysteries remain just out of reach, such as

But the amazing fact remains that nearly 3 billion people around the world,

하지만 놀라운 사실은 세상의 30억에 달하는 사람들,

many of whom cannot understand each other,

그들 중 다수는 서로의 말을 이해하지 못하는 그들이,

are nevertheless speaking the same words shaped by 6000 years of history.

그럼에도 불구하고 6000년 전에 형성된 같은 단어를 사용하고 있다는 것입니다.
