You're telling a friend an amazing story,

당신이 친구한테 엄청난 이야기를 들려주는데

and you just get to the best part when suddenly he interrupts,

제일 중요한 부분에서 친구가 갑자기 끼어들어서는 말합니다.

Interrupt: (말하는 중에) 끼어들다

"The alien and I," not "Me and the alien."

“The alien and I”야, "Me and the alien."가 아니라.

Most of us would probably be annoyed,

대부분의 사람들은 짜증이 나겠죠.

but aside from the rude interruption,

하지만 끼어들기가 무례했단 건 둘째 치고,

does your friend have a point?

그런 행동이 타당할까요?

Someone has a point: ~의 의견이 타당하다, 일리가 있다

Was your sentence actually grammatically incorrect?

정말 당신의 문장이 문법적으로 틀렸나요?

And if he still understood it, why does it even matter?

틀렸다 한들 말 뜻을 알아들을 수만 있다면, 왜 그게 문제가 될 까요?

From the point of view of linguistics,

grammar is a set of patterns for how words are put together to form phrases or clauses,

문법이란 단어가 구 또는 절을 형성하는 일련의 규칙적 패턴입니다.

Phrase: 구(두 개 이상의 단어로 구성된 문장 성분)

Clause: 절(주어와 술어의 구성이 있는 문장 성분)

whether spoken or in writing.

말이든 글이든 말이죠.

Different languages have different patterns.

다른 언어에는 다른 패턴이 있습니다.

In English, the subject normally comes first, followed by the verb, and then the object,

영어에서는 보통 주어가 먼저 오고, 그 다음이 동사, 그리고 목적어가 오죠.

while in Japanese and many other languages,

일본어와 다른 많은 언어의 경우

the order is subject, object, verb.

Some scholars have tried to identify patterns common to all languages,

prescriptivists think a given language should follow consistent rules,

while descriptivists see variation and adaptation as a natural and necessary part of language.

For much of history, the vast majority of language was spoken.

But as people became more interconnected and writing gained importance,

The linguistic approach that tries to understand and map such differences

이 같은 차이들을 이해하고 도식화하려는 언어적 접근법을

without dictating correct ones is known as descriptivism.

‘옳은 것’을 제시하지 않고 이렇게 하는 것을 기술주의라고 합니다.

Dictate: 지시하다, 명령(결정)하다

Rather than deciding how language should be used,

언어가 어떻게 사용되어야 하는지 정해주기 보다는

it describes how people actually use it,

실제 사람들이 어떻게 언어를 사용하는지를 보여주고

and tracks the innovations they come up with in the process.

But while the debate between prescriptivism and descriptivism continues,

the two are not mutually exclusive.

At its best, prescriptivism is useful for informing people

Ultimately, grammar is best thought of as a set of linguistic habits
