How to have “the talk” with your employees
Ahh the holidays, a time of hot cocoa, cozy fires, gift giving… and end of the year performance reviews.
Like a corporate version of “the talk,” it’s a conversation neither managers, or employees like having, and frankly , they can get a little awkward.
But Russ Laraway, former Googler and Co-founder of Candor, Inc., thinks it’s time to change the conversation entirely. He says that to retain top talent , managers shouldn’t focus on performance, they should talk about careers.
회사에서 상사가 '자네, 잠깐 얘기 좀 하지'라고 한다면? 듣는 우리도 식은땀 나지만, 상사도 어떻게 얘기할지 고민이 될 거예요(좋은 상사라면요...)have the talk : talk는 '대화'인데요, the talk는 그냥 대화가 아니라 중요하고 진지한 대화를 뜻해요. '우리 얘기 좀 해' 할 때 그 '얘기'...(듣는 순간 바로 긴장되는....;;) 근데 재밌는 건 소개팅남/녀와 사귀자~라는 이야기를 할 때도 "have the talk"라고 쓰이는 재밌는 영어표현이랍니다. 어쨌든, 긴장되는 대화는 이 영어표현으로!frankly : "솔직히". "frankly speaking"이라고 해서 '솔직히 말해'라고 쓰이기도 해요. (Frankly speaking, I didn't like it at all. 솔직히 말해서, 완전 별로였어.)retain something : 인사팀 (HR)이라는 짚고 넘어가야 할 영어표현! retain top talents :-)retain은 '보유하다'라고 사전에 나오는데요, '갖고 있는 것을 계속 유지하다'는 뜻이에요.

Companies often treat them interchangeably with career planning, but in reality they’re polar opposites .
Reviews are mainly backwards-looking , focusing on smaller, tactical checklists, while career discussions tackle a larger, forward-facing vision.
So why is thinking bigger so important? Playing the long game not only helps guide employees’ day-to-day actions, it ensures they feel fulfilled, even when there’s no budget for a raise this quarter.
좀 더 나은 talk를 위해서는 변화가 필요하다고 해요. 단순한 실적 평가에서 탈피해야 한다는데, 그럼 뭘 하라는 걸까요?imposter : '사칭하는 사람' '사기꾼'. 보이는 것과 실체가 다른 것을 의미해요. 본문에서는 실적 평가는 그닥 도움이 안 된다는 소리...겠죠!?polar opposites : polar는 극(북극 남극 할 때 그 '극')을 의미하고, opposite은 반대. 그럼 polar opposites는 그냥 반대가 아니라 양 극단에 있는 '완전한 정 반대'를 의미하겠죠? '극과 극'이라는 뜻의 영어표현이겠네요.backwards-looking : backward는 '뒤쪽으로'라는 뜻인데, backwards-looking은 '뒤돌아보기'라는 뜻이에요. 미리 앞을 내다보는 것과 반대로, 일이 이미 일어나고 난 뒤에야 이렇다 저렇다 평가하는 거죠.여기서 짚고 넘어가야할 내용: backward는 형용사인데, 부사처럼 사용하려면 backwards하고 "s"를 붙혀야 한답니다!forward-facing : forward는 backward의 반대말, 즉 '앞쪽으로'라는 뜻이에요. face는 '바라보다, 직면하다'는 뜻이구요. backward looking과 달리 forward facing은 '앞을 보는'이라는 뜻이겠죠?play the long game : 단기에 결과를 내는 일이 아니라, 비교적 먼 미래를 염두에 두고 장기적인 전략을 따른다는 뜻이에요.day-to-day : 매일의, 일상적인.를 뜻하는 영어표현입니다.
Here’s how to approach it:

Just kidding, please don’t do that. Laraway offers three steps to helping a person uncover their career path:
- Understand the pivot points : Take an hour to discover where your employees came from. Noting patterns that emerge across transition points in the person’s life, from switching majors , to moving, will help you better understand their values and motivators.
- Ask about their dreams: Aka , what would the pinnacle of their career look like? You can start broad, then hone in on specifics like whether they want to be a senior-level “maker” (individual contributor), versus a senior-level manager (overseeing a team).
- Create an action plan: Once you know where a person comes from and where they want to go, you can help create a plan to get there. As a manager, you can support along the way by expanding their network and providing resources to hone their skills .
As a wise man named Shia once said, “don’t let your dreams be dreams.” Take the time to understand a person’s aspirations and help them make it happen — then they’ll repay you tenfold as an employee.

'Ask about their dreams'에 대한 부연설명을 위해 쓰였어요.pinnacle : '높은 산봉우리'라는 뜻인데, '정점' '절정'이라는 뜻도 있어요.hone in on something / hone something : hone in on 또는 hone은 '(기술 등을) 연마하다'라는 뜻이에요.tenfold : fold는 원래 '접다'라는 뜻인데요. 접으면 접을수록 여러 겹으로 늘어나잖아요? 그래서 fold는 숫자와 함께 '~겹' '~배', '이중, 삼중'의 뜻으로도 쓰이는데요, twofold, threefold 이런 식으로요. tenfold는 '10배'라는 뜻이겠죠?
