"Tell me about yourself"

 

Hey everyone, I am Vincent and today going to be talking about the age old job interview question:

안녕 여러분, 나는 빈센트라고 해. 오늘은 아주 고전적인 인터뷰 질문에 대해 얘기할 거야.

Age old: 매우 오래 된

Tell me about yourself.

“본인에 대해 말해보라.”

Now the question is asked at the start of most job interviews at every company

이 질문은 모든 회사의 대부분의 채용 면접 시작 부분에 나오곤 하는데

and there's many different ways to be able to word this question

이 질문을 문장으로 쓰는 방식은 여러가지가 있지만

Word: (특정한 방식으로) 말/글을 통해 표현하다

but for the most part they're all asking about the same thing.

대부분의 경우 그들은 똑같은 걸 물어보는 거야.

Now the worst thing that you can do is ask the interviewer,

네가 면접관에게 할 수 있는 최악의 질문은

well, what do want to know about me?

뭐, “저에 대해 뭘 알고 싶으신 건가요?”가 되겠지.

This show that you haven't properly prepared for the interview.

이건 네가 면접 준비를 제대로 하지 않았다는 뜻이야.

Now the interviewer doesn't want to know about your hobbies, your family, or even your favorite TV show.

그리고 면접관은 네 취미나, 가족이나, 심지어 좋아하는 TV 프로 같은 걸 알고 싶은 게 아니야.

The biggest mistake that many job candidates make is

많은 채용 후보자가 저지르는 가장 큰 실수는

thinking that the interviewer wants to know them personally, as a person.

면접관이 그들을 개인적으로, 인간으로서 알고 싶어한다고 생각하는 거야.

So what major points do you want to get across?

그래서 네가 전달해야 할 주요 포인트는 뭘까?

Get across: 이해시키다, 알게 하다

Well, the interviewer is interested in understanding if you can do the job.

일단, 면접관은 네가 그 일을 해낼 수 있는지 알아내는 데 관심이 있어.

Whether or not you would fit into the team and the culture of the organization

네가 팀과 조직문화에 잘 녹아들 수 있을지 없을지,

Fit into: ~에 녹아들다, ~에 맞게 변하다

and what you have accomplished in the past

그리고 과거에 네가 어떤 것을 이뤄냈는지

and how you can help their organization,

그리고 네가 어떻게 조직에 기여할지.

but they're not asking you to give your entire biography,

하지만 네 일대기를 전부 알고 싶어하는 건 아니야.

Biography: 전기, 일대기, 약력

or read through your resume line by line.

네 이력서를 한 줄 한 줄 읽어달라는 것도 아니야.

Line by line: 한 줄 씩

Keep your statements brief and your answer to this question should be around two to three minutes.

진술은 간결하게 하고, 질문에 대한 답은 2-3분 정도 되어야 해.

You also want to make sure that you show that you know

그리고 너는 회사와 직무 내용 설명서, 그리고

a lot about the company, about the job description, and about the role that you're applying for.

네가 지원한 역할에 대해 잘 알고 있다는 걸 확실히 보여줘야 해.

Apply for ~: ~에 지원하다

Make sure to do a quick Google search to understand what the company does

그 회사가 하는 일이 뭔지 알아내기 위해 간단한 구글 검색을 하도록 하고

and maybe even look for some recent headlines.

최근 기사도 한 번 찾아볼 수 있겠지.

Now there's three different sections that you want to make sure that you cover.

네가 꼭 언급해야 할  것들을 3가지로 나눌 수 있는데

So let's break it down.

하나하나 살펴보자고.

Break down: 부수다, 분해하다, 분석하다

Section number one is education and experience.

첫 번째는 교육과 경험이야.

You want to also number two: highlight your most important accomplishments.

두 번째는 네가 해낸 것들 중 가장 중요한 것을 강조할 것.

and number three: show that you have drive, energy, and motivation,

그리고 세 번째. 네가 추진력과 에너지, 동기가 있다는 것을 보여야 해.

Drive: 추진력, 적극성

especially through your tone and how you say things.

특히 네 목소리 톤과 말하는 방식을 통해서.

Sometimes how you say it is even more important than what you say.

때로는 어떻게 말하느냐가 무엇을 말하느냐보다 중요하거든.

But at the end of the day there's one thing that you want to get across

하지만 결국 네가 전달하고자 하는 하나지.

At the end of the day: 결국은, 마지막에는

I can add value and be a great fit for your organization.

나는 가치를 창출해낼 수 있고, 당신의 조직에 매우 잘 어울린다..

I recently completed my MBA from South University

저는 최근에 South University에서 경영학 석사를 취득했습니다.

where I led 150 other peers as the class president, implemented the campuses first recycling program.

그곳에서 저는 회장으로서 150명의 동기들을 이끌었으며, 학내에 최초의 재활용 프로그램을 도입했습니다.

Last summer I interned at SanCity Corporation,

지난 여름 저는 SanCity 사에서 인턴을 했습니다.

where I developed the holiday sales and marketing strategy

그곳에서 저는 연휴 세일행사와 마케팅전략을 개발하여

that led to the largest growth in sales the company had ever experienced.

회사 역사상 유례없이 큰 폭의 매출 성장을 이끌어 냈습니다.

Lead to ~: ~를 초래하다, ~라는 결과를 내다

While I really enjoyed that experience,

그러한 경험은 매우 즐거웠지만,

I'm very interested in this opportunity with Solar Media

그럼에도 저는 Solar Media 입사 기회에 관심을 갖게 되었는데

because of my passion for green energy and delivering sustainable growth in sales.

녹색 에너지와, 지속 가능한 매출 성장을 실현하는 것에 대한 제 열정 때문입니다.

Let's review what this interviewee did well.

이 지원자가 뭘 잘 했는지 살펴보자.

Number one: he included his academic background with an MBA from South University.

첫 번째. 그는 South University 경영학 석사라는 학력을 포함시켰어.

Academic background: 학력

He presented that he was a student leader there.

거기서 학생 리더였다는 말도 했지.

He also showed that he had relevant experience

또 적합한 경험이 있다는 것도 보여줬는데

starting a recycling program in a passion in green energy

녹색 에너지에 대한 열정으로 재활용 프로그램을 시작했다는 거였지.

while driving growth in sales at a previous job.

예전 직장에서 매출 성장을 이끌어내기도 했고.

He also showed that he's very interested in this opportunity

그는 또 이 채용 기회에 매우 관심이 있다는 것도 보여줬고

and passionate about the industry that he wants to be able to join.

그게 참여하고 싶은 산업에 대해 열정적이라는 것도 보여줬지.

Therefore he can add value and be a great fit for this organization.

따라서 그는 가치를 창출할 수 있고, 조직에 아주 잘 어울리지.

Fit: (명사) 잘 어울리는 것, 꼭 맞는 것. 동사만이 아니라 명사로도 쓰이는 것 알아 두기

Now you want to make sure that you practice practice practice.

자 이제 연습하고 연습하고 연습해야 할 거야.

This is your first impression to the interviewer,

이건 면접관에게 보여주는 첫인상이니까

so you don't want to lose their attention in order to really knock it out of the park,

성공적으로 해내기 위해서는 그들이 계속 주목하도록 해야 할 거고,

Knock out of the park: 크게 성공하다, 훌륭히 해내다. 홈런을 쳐서 공이 구장 밖으로 날아가는 모습에서 유래.

you want to plan and rehearse.

계획하고 연습해야 할 거야.

It is almost guaranteed that you're going to get a question similar to this one

이것과 비슷한 질문을  받게 된다는 건 거의 확실해.

so you want to make sure that you're selling what the interviewer is buying.

그러니 면접관이 사려는 걸 팔아야 한다는 거지.

Think about what they'll be interested in by really understanding the job description

직무 내용 설명서와, 거기서 그들이 원하는 자질이 뭔지를 잘 이해하고

and the traits that they're looking for in the job description.

그들이 관심있어 할만한 게 뭔지 생각해 봐.

Make sure you focus on those strengths.

그와 같은 강점들에 집중하도록 하고.

Your answer should be no more than three minutes,

답변 시간은 3분을 넘기면 안 돼.

nothing worse than somebody who rambles.

장황하게 말하는 사람은 최악이야.

Ramble: 장황하게 이야기하다, 어슬렁거리다

So think of it as a movie preview.

이걸 영화 예고편으로 생각해 봐.

You just wanna hook the interviewer in just enough

면접관을 충분히 끌어들여서

Hook in ~: ~을 끌어들이다. 생선을 갈고리(hook)에 꿰어 끌어 올리는 것을 생각할 것.

that they're gonna pay for that ticket to watch the entire movie.

영화 전체를 보기 위해 표를 구매하도록 만들어야 해.

You also want to make sure that you find a way to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

그리고 나머지 사람들보다 눈에 띌 만한 방법을 찾아야 하지.

Stand out from the crowd: 특출나다, 특별히 눈에 띄다.
