Formula One’s new owner wants it to be like the NFL
A few months ago, Liberty Media, a US-based company with stakes in Live Nation and the Atlanta Braves, acquired 19.1% of Formula One for $4.4B.
And as expected, big changes are on the way .

Each race will be treated like its own Super Bowl
Right now, F-1 has 21 Grand Prix races all around the world, all of which are 3-day events. But Liberty ain’t satisfied.
They want each race to be a week-long shindig , full of sponsored activities and musical performances. They also want to sell naming rights to each race.
According to Liberty’s Chairman Chase Carey, this will make the races feel “much bigger, much broader, and appeal to a much larger audience happening throughout the week.”

Expanding F-1’s presence in America
Thanks to the Austin, Texas Grand Prix added in 2012, the global auto sport is already gaining steam in the US, and Liberty wants to keep that momentum going by adding a race in a major market like NY or LA.
They also want to start promoting rivalries between teams (like Mercedes AMG and Red Bull Racing) and top drivers (like Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg) to give American sports fans the type of wall-to-wall coverage they get from other sports.
Oh, and did we mention virtual reality?
Liberty sees a huge opportunity to bring fans closer to the sport by letting them experience a race from the driver’s perspective… as they zoom around the track at 233 mph.
