(수강신청 실패한 사람 부러움 주의)

Jessie: Wanna grab lunch today?

오늘 점심 같이 먹을래?

Bianca: I can’t. This week is totally booked with all the classes I want to try out this semester.

아니, 나 이번 주는 이번 학기 듣고 싶은 수업들로 빽빽하게 채워버려서 시간이 없어.

Jessie: Oh, are you still class shopping?

아 너 아직 class shopping 하는 거야?

me: ???

듣고 싶은 수업 다 들어보고 그 중에 고르는 것

상냥하게 설명

한국 대학 수강신청은 어지간한 아이돌 콘서트 티켓팅 뺨치죠… 단 1초만에 한 학기의 운명이 갈려버리는..ㅠㅠ 반면에 미국 애들은 듣고 싶은 수업 마음껏 넣어놓고 한 번씩 들어본 다음, 수강 신청 정정 기간에 듣기 싫은 걸 빼버린다네요. 이걸 “class shopping”이라고 해요. 우리는 begging(구걸)을 하는데 얘네는 shopping을 한다네요. 크흡 부럽…

이렇게 여러군데 돌아다니면서 둘러보는 걸 “무슨무슨 shopping”이라고 하는데 church shopping, apartment shopping 등이 있어요.

덤으로 수강신청기간은 registration week, class shopping이 이뤄지는 정정기간은 add/drop period, 청강은 audit(or sit-in)이라고 해요.

After registration week there is a 3 week add/drop period. During this time you can engage in stressful but giddy practice of class shopping.

수강신청 기간 후에는 3주간의 정정기간이 있다. 이 기간 동안 너는 긴장감 넘치며 아찔한 class shopping을 하게 된다.

개강 첫 날 어떻게 보냈어?
“Pretty good, went class shopping and decided to enroll in CS150, and CS188. Dropping CS170 and Math55 though.”

잘 보냈어. Class shopping을 한 다음 CS150랑 CS188 넣기로 하고 CS170랑 Math55는 뺐어.
