We try to look for these technical vectors that have a future and that are headed up
우리는 비전 있는, 위로 향하는 기술적 항로를 찾으려고 했죠.

and you know technology--
아시다시피 기술은,
different pieces of technology kind of go in cycles.
여러가지 기술들은 일정한 주기로 순환을 하는데요.
In cycles: 주기적으로
They have their springs and summers and autumns
기술에도 봄이 있고, 여름과 가을이 있습니다
and then they, you know, go to the graveyard of technology
그리고 아시다시피, 결국엔 ‘기술의 무덤’으로 향하죠
and so we try to pick things that are in there springs
그래서 우리는 ‘봄’ 단계에 있는 기술을 선택하려고 해요.
and if you choose wisely,
잘만 선택한다면
you can save yourself an enormous amount of work
엄청난 양의 수고를 덜어낼 수 있습니다
versus trying to do everything
이것저것 다 해보는 대신에요.
and you can really put energy into making those new emerging technologies
새롭게 떠오르는 기술을 개발하는 데 에너지를 쏟을 수 있죠
be great on your platform rather than just ok,
그저 그런 게 아니라, 당신의 플랫폼에서 아주 대단하게 만드는 거예요
because you're spreading yourself too thin.
너무 이것저것 다 하려고 하면 그저그렇게 되죠.
Spread oneself thin: 한꺼번에 이것저것 다 하려는 나머지 어느 하나도 제대로 못하는 것.
So we have a history of doing that as an example.
우리는 그런 면에서 모범을 보여왔어요.
We went from the 5 inch floppy disks to the three-and-a-half inch floppy disk with the Mac
우리는 5인치 플로피 디스크를 벗어나 Mac에 3.5인치 플로피 디스크를 도입했죠
Before, before other people, right?
남들이 하기 전에요, 그렇죠?
We were the first to do that.
우리가 최초였어요.
We made the three-and-a-half inch floppies popular.
우리가 3.5인치 플로피를 대중화시켰죠.
Sony invented it and we put it in the first products
소니가 발명했고, 우리가 처음으로 상품에 적용했죠
and there were some good reasons we did that.
그렇게 할 만한 충분한 이유가 있었어요.
We got rid of the floppy disk altogether in 1998 with the first iMac.
1998년 첫 번째 iMac에는 플로피 디스크를 전부 없애버렸어요.
Get rid of something: ~를 제거하다, 없애버리다
We also got rid of these things called serial and parallel ports
직렬포트와 병렬포트라는 것들도 없애버렸죠
and we were the first to dock USB even though Intel had invented it.
인텔이 발명하긴 했지만, USB를 장착 시킨 것도 우리가 최초였어요.
Dock: 정박 시키다, 장착 시키다
We first sought in mass on iMacs
우리가 iMac에서 처음 대중화시켰죠
and so we have got rid of things.
그래서 전부 없애버렸죠.
We were one of the first to get rid of optical drives with the Macbook air
우리는 맥북에어에서 최초로 광학 드라이브를 없앴어요.
and I think things are moving in that direction as well
그리고 점차 그런 추세로 가는 것 같기도 해요.
and sometimes when we get rid of things like the floppy disk drive on the original iMac
이따금 우리가 오리지널 iMac에서의 플로피 디스크 같은 것을 없애버리면
people call us crazy.
사람들은 우리더러 미쳤다고 해요.
Or at least premature, maybe.
아님 적어도 시기상조라고 하겠죠.
Premature: 너무 이른, 시기상조의
No, they call us crazy.
아뇨, 미쳤다고 해요.
Okay.
그렇군요.
But sometimes you just have to pick the things
하지만 골라내야 할 때가 있어요
that look like they're going to be the right horses to ride going forward.
타고 가기에 적절한 말처럼 보이는 것들을요.
Well, people say, you know, the iPad is crippled in this respect.
아시겠지만 그런 면에서 iPad가 잘못 만들어졌다고들 하죠.
Crippled: 불구의, 손상된
You know what, I'd say two things:
제가 말하고 싶은 건 두 가지에요.
Number one, things are packages of emphasis.
첫째, 한 뭉치의 ‘강조’들이 제품을 이루는 거예요.
Some things are emphasized than a product,
어떤 것들은 제품보다 강조되고,
some things are not done as well as a product,
어떤 것들은 제품보다 다소 떨어지고,
some things are chosen not to be done at all in a product,
어떤 것들은 제품에 아예 적용조차 되지 않기도 하죠.
and so different people make different choices,
여러 다른 사람들이 다른 선택을 하는데
and if the market tells us we're making the wrong choices,
시장이 우리에게 잘못된 선택을 하고 있다고 한다면
we listen to the market.
시장의 말을 듣는 거죠.
We're just people running this company.
우린 그저 회사를 운영하는 사람들일 뿐이에요.
We're trying to make great products for people
우린 사람들을 위해 좋은 제품을 만들려고 하고
and so we have at least the courage of our convictions to say
그래서 적어도 신념에 따라 말할 용기는 있죠
The courage of one’s convictions: 신념에 따라 행동할 용기
“We don't think this is part of what makes a great product.
“이건 좋은 제품을 만드는 데 도움이 안 돼.
We're going to leave it out.”
이건 빼버릴 거야.”
Leave something out: ~을 빠뜨리다, 빼버리다
Some people are going to not like that.
이런 걸 싫어하는 사람들도 있겠죠.
They're going to call us names.
우리를 욕하기도 할 거고요
Call someone names: ~을 욕하다, 모욕을 주다
It's not going to be in certain companies’ vested interests that we do that,
우리가 그렇게 하는 것이 특정 기업의 이해관계에 안 좋을 수도 있어요
Be in someone’s interest: ~에게 이득이 되다
but we're going to take the heat
하지만 우린 그런 비난도 감수할 겁니다
Take the heat: 비난/반대 등을 감수하다, 견디다
because we want to make the best product in the world for customers.
왜냐면 우린 고객들을 위해 세계 최고의 제품을 만들고 싶으니까요.
We're going to instead focus our energy on these technologies
(그런 비난을 신경 쓰는 대신) 우리는 기술에 에너지를 집중시킬 겁니다.
which we think are in their ascendancy
막 부상하고 있다고 생각되는
Ascendancy: 우세, 우월, 부상
and we think are going to be the right technologies for customers,
그리고 고객들에게 딱 맞는 기술이 될 거라고 생각되는 기술에요.
and you know what?
그리고 그거 아세요?
They're paying us to make those choices.
고객들은 우리가 이런 선택을 하도록 돈을 줘요
That's what a lot of customers pay us to do
그게 많은 고객들이 우리에게 돈을 내는 이유에요
It’s to try to make the best products we can.
우리가 만들 수 있는 최고의 제품을 만들라는 거죠
If we succeed, they'll buy them
우리가 성공하면, 고객들이 사 줄 거고요
and if we don't, they won't
성공하지 못하면, 사지 않겠죠
and it will all work itself out.
저절로 그렇게 될 거예요.
