살아남을 언어는 무엇?
For decades, English has dominated the world’s languages.

Around the turn of the millennium,

about a quarter of the world’s population could communicate in English to some degree.

So we wanted to know, what is the future of language?

Well, there are certainly competing ideas

about what will become the most widely spoken language.
어느 언어가 가장 널리 쓰이는 언어가 될지에 대해서 말입니다.
But one thing is pretty widely agreed upon:
하지만 한가지에 대해서는 널리 합의가 이루어졌는데
that the total number of languages worldwide will drop considerably.
세계적으로 언어의 수 자체가 상당히 감소할 것이라는 점입니다.
Today, there are about 7,000 languages spoken around the globe.
오늘날 세계에서 사용되는 언어는 7000개 가량 됩니다.
This number is thought to drop by about 90%,
이 수치는 90퍼센트 가량 감소할 것으로 생각됩니다
although new hybrid languages are expected to spring up, maintaining culture and diversity.
새로운 혼합형 언어들이 나타나 언어와 다양성을 유지할 것으로 기대되긴 하지만요.
Spring up: 불쑥 나타나다
Even today, nearly two-thirds of the world natively speaks only one of 12 languages.
심지어 오늘날, 세계 인구의 3분의 2 가량이 겨우 12개 언어를 모국어로 씁니다.
Most language predictions are based on population growth,

with China and India taking the lead.

The UN suggests that by 2050,

A major reason for this assumption is

Still, many have criticized this view,

saying that French-speaking nations in Africa

it may actually be English as a second language that dominates the world.

For example, although Chinese is spoken by more people,

Furthermore, Chinese is considered more complicated to learn than English,

and is not used nearly as often in scientific communication.

It is also important to note

that English has the considerable advantage

of already being the predominant language for print, education, media,

and most importantly, the internet.

Many estimates also predict

that Spanish and Arabic will see a huge influx of both native and secondary speakers,

with Spanish already the second most spoken language in the United States.
스페인어는 이미 미국에서 두 번째로 많이 쓰이는 언어입니다.
The future of language is easy to see:
언어의 미래는 예측하기 쉽습니다.
most languages will die out,
대부분의 언어는 사라질 것이고
Die out: 사라지다, 죽어 없어지다
and existing languages in countries with rapid population growth
급속한 인구 성장을 보이는 국가들에서 쓰는 언어의 경우
will naturally see the greatest rise.
자연스레 큰 폭으로 성장할 것입니다.
But the most likely scenario is
그러나 가장 그럴싸한 시나리오는
Likely: 가능성 있는, 그럴사한
that the world will continue to globalize through the English language,
세상은 영어를 통해 계속해서 세계화될 것이며
largely through non-native speakers.
이는 주로 비원어민들을 통해 이뤄질 것입니다.
The world has over 7,000 languages.
세상에는 7000개가 넘는 언어들이 있습니다.

Technically, Chinese is a macro-language made of 7 major groups
